One week ago Virgin Media decided that they would screw up our work internet connection by releasing our fixed IP address. We got a new IP address which caused us untold grief, and having just managed to get all our systems straight and working again guess what? Yep Virgin Media changed our IP address back to what it was a the beginning of last week, so all the changes we had made to get our systems up and running again had to be undone.

All this was after we were told the first IP address we had wasn’t fixed and was from the dynamic address pool and the new one we had been given we were assured was from the static pool. The reverse look up on the IP addresses did have us worried, our fixed IP address gives a look up of .static.telewest.net where as the one we were assigned last week has the look up cable.ubr06.stav.blueyonder.co.uk.

We could tell that trouble was round the corner, although we expected it after three months when the lease on the IP would run out. However at 16:00 the connection went down and when it came back up our old fixed IP was back, pity it was seven days too late.

The most ironic part of this tale of woe is that just as our letter of complaint left the building in the post the connection went down.
